Taxi driver killed in motorway crash in County Durham

A taxi driver died when his vehicle left a motorway in County Durham.

His Skoda veered off the northbound carriageway of the A1(M), close to the Chester-le-Street junction, and hit an electricity substation.

The 59-year-old Stockton man was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham, but was pronounced dead a short time afterwards.

Four passengers from Sedgefield, a 40-year-old man, a woman, 38, and girl and boy aged six and two, were uninjured.

Witnesses to the incident, which happened at about 0400 BST, are asked to contact Durham Police.
