Heavy rain floods premises in parts of Kent and Sussex

A number of businesses and homes have been flooded following Wednesday's heavy rainfall.

Police in Sussex dealt with eight incidents in the early hours involving vehicles struggling with surface water.

A spa in Rye had to have water pumped out of its basement, while fire crews in Burgess Hill dealt with about 3ft of water at an adult education centre.

In Kent, the fire service was called to floods at several homes in Herne Bay and Ramsgate.

According to the Environment Agency, more than 60 properties, mainly basement flats in Central Parade and Mortimer Street in Herne Bay, were affected by flood water during downpours at about 0330 BST.

It said the incident was not caused by flooding from the Plenty Brook and no flood watches had been issued for that stretch of river.

Earlier, it issued three flood watch alerts for streams around Crawley, Ifield, Haywards Heath and Lindfield, in Sussex.
