Reassurance over County Durham traveller event

Steps are being taken to ensure an annual travellers' event in County Durham runs smoothly.

A large number of people are expected for the traditional horse trading event in Horden, near Peterlee, over the weekend.

Police, Durham County Council and other organisations are reassuring residents that work is going on to reduce the impact of the event.

Organisers say it brings an economic boost to the area.

Durham County Council head of social inclusion, Gerald Tompkins, said: "We have been working with members of the travelling community, who have expressed a desire for the event to take place without causing any problems for residents.

"Police and officers from the county council will be on duty throughout the weekend with the aim of ensuring it passes smoothly and without incident."
