Three West Midlands ambulance staff attacked each week

Three ambulance workers are attacked every week on average in the West Midlands, according to new figures.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said 166 incidents were reported by staff in 2009/10.

A spokeswoman said it was "completely unacceptable" that staff should have to face violence and verbal abuse.

"The trust has a zero-tolerance policy in place and works extremely hard to bring the full weight of the law to bear on anyone who attacks our staff."

She added: "It is simply not acceptable that staff who are there to help people, suffer at the hands of patients, their relatives or other people at the scene."

Sixty-seven incidents have already been reported by ambulance staff between April and August of this year.

An ambulance service spokesman said 162 attacks were reported in 2008/9 and 148 in 2007/8.
