Firm prosecuted over Lancashire tractor-pulling death

A company is to be prosecuted after a man, 58, was killed at a tractor-pulling competition in Lancashire.

Jan Van Alphen, from Holland, died when a 30-tonne trailer trapped him at Great Eccleston showground in August 2007.

He was competing in the British Tractor Pulling Championships and European Challenge Cup tractor pulling finals.

A W Blake Ltd, of Ivergill near Carlisle, and its owner Andrew Blake, have been charged with breaching health and safety regulations.

Each are charged with breaching Section 3.1 of Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 - putting someone's life in danger.

The charges follow an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive.
