The latest stage of the regeneration of a County Durham market town is being delayed to allow festive celebrations to take place.

Improvements have been planned for Fore Bondgate and Newgate Street in Bishop Auckland, with work due to start soon.

Residents and businesses expressed concern it would affect events such as the Christmas tree lights switch on, street markets, or a fashion show.

The council has now said the next phase will start on 4 January, 2011.

Chris Myers, town centre development manager, said: "During last month's consultation period it became clear a number of people had real concerns that the festive events may suffer should there be town centre works underway at the same time.

"As a result we will move the start of this programme of works in to January and hope this will attract many more people to join in the Christmas fun on offer."
