Illegal fireworks danger warning in County Durham
Illegal fireworks seized in County Durham could have put people at risk, the fire service has warned.
County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, along with trading standards officers, carried out tests on bangers removed from circulation.
A demonstration using a rubber hand showed that they could injure or completely blow off two fingers.
People have been advised to purchase fireworks from reputable dealers or attend organised displays.
Lee Aspery, from the fire service, said: "It is essential that residents are made aware of the potentially dangerous and life altering effects that fireworks can have when they are used inappropriately.
"These dangers are severely magnified when using counterfeit or illegal fireworks which are manufactured from poor quality materials that can cause traumatic injuries.
"When purchasing fireworks please ensure that they have the BS 7114 mark on them and they are used in appropriate settings following the accompanying guidance."
