An ex-champion boxer has been warned by a judge he could be jailed after admitting attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Former British heavyweight boxing champion Matt Skelton, 43, of Wilden, Bedfordshire, lied to police three times when faced with a speeding fine.

Cambridge Crown Court was told that Skelton had on three occasions falsely named "Brian Williams" as the driver.

Judge Gareth Hawkesworth adjourned sentencing until 10 December.

Skelton was freed on conditional bail.

The offences took place between November 2006 and November 2008, the court heard.

Judge Hawkesworth said: "The offences are serious and you must not expect, just because I am giving you bail, that you are going to be free after sentence.

"All options, including custody, are going to be open to this court when it comes to sentencing."
