Icy road warning for Tyne and Northumberland drivers

Drivers have been warned about icy conditions on roads across Tyneside and Northumberland after temperatures plummeted overnight.

Dozens of schools were still closed and motorists were being urged to drive with caution.

There were problems on a number of main roads around Tyneside and Northumberland.

There was also disruption on public transport, with a restricted train timetable on the East Coast Mainline.

The Northern Rail shuttle service between Newcastle and the Metro Centre, in Gateshead, was suspended but Carlisle and Hexham trains were still stopping there.

Newcastle Airport is open but there is some disruption to services.

There were problems on the Tyne and Wear Metro with no service between North Shields and Shiremoor and delays elsewhere because of overhead power cable problems.
