Shrewsbury roads closed by flooding

Roads in Shrewsbury were closed on Monday due to rising flood water.

Sydney Avenue in Castlefields and Gravel Hill Lane near to the West Mid Showground were among those closed.

A spokesman from Shropshire Council said the river level at the Welsh Bridge was currently 3.4m and was expected to peak at 4m to 4.5m.

Frankwell, Riverside and St Julians Friars car parks in Shrewsbury were also closed with motorists advised to move their cars to Abbey Foregate.

He said: "Theatre Severn remains open. The council advises theatre goers to use alternative car parks in the town centre.

"Park and Ride sites will also continue to operate."

Several flood warnings were issued for Shropshire during Monday evening.

These were on the River Severn at Frankwell, Ironbrige, Shrewsbury and the Showgrand, on the River Vyrnwy at Maesbrook and Melverley and the River Perry at Mitton.
