Soldier and girlfriend killed in tree crash named

A soldier and his girlfriend who died when the car they were in crashed into a tree in County Durham have been named by police.

Durham Police said the car left the A1086 at Blackhall Rocks, near Peterlee, on Saturday night, flipped onto its roof and skidded into a tree.

Driver Jamie Hall, 23, and Michelle Swinton, 22, from the Blackhall area, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Hall served with 4th Regiment Royal Artillery.

Police said Ms Swinton had a four-year-old son.

The couple had just driven out of Blackhall when the car left the carriageway just south of the junction with Warnbrook Crescent.

No-one else was in the vehicle.
