New chairman for Durham County Council

The new chairman of Durham County Council is the son of a former county hall cleaner, it has been revealed.

Dennis Morgan, who has represented the Coxhoe Electoral Division for the last 10 years was appointed to the role on Wednesday.

He takes over from Councillor Mac Williams.

The council said the new chairman was a former Framwellgate Moor Comprehensive School pupil and son of a Durham County Hall cleaner.

For his chosen charity during his term in office, he has selected the Rainbow Trust.

The chairman is the civic and ceremonial head of the authority. Mr Morgan's role is non political and he will carry out the post for one year.

Councillor Morgan said: "I am looking forward to representing the people of County Durham and will strive to enhance the reputation of Durham County Council."

Councillor Morgan began work as a commercial apprentice at Huwood Mining Machinery in Gateshead in 1966 and was appointed Northern Region Trades Union Officer 1971 - 2001 for the APEX-GMB Union.

His hobbies and interests include County Durham's Industrial Heritage and in particular the Bowburn Miner's Banner Group. He lives in Bowburn with his wife of 38 years, Lynda.

The new Vice Chairman is Councillor Linda Marshall who represents Chester-le-Street West Central and Pelton Fell.

During his 12 months in office, former chairman Councillor Williams raised £45,000 for his chosen charities, the George Elmy Lifeboat Restoration Scheme and Down's Syndrome Association along with the Japanese Disaster Fund.
