Warning over water work criminals in Cheshire

Police in Cheshire are urging people to beware of conmen who take advantage of work being carried out locally to trick their way into people's homes.

Officers have joined with Dee Valley Water in urging people not to assume an apparent workman is genuine, when pipe repairs are being done near their home.

Det Insp Sharon Case said the criminals can sound very plausible but steal cash or valuables from people's homes.

She urged people to ask for ID or call Dee Valley Water to verify the caller.

People can also set up a password with the water company, she said.

Norman Holladay, managing director of Dee Valley Group, added: "It is quite rare for one of our engineers to call unannounced but there is the odd occasion where they might need to check the supply."
