Man falls from roof top of Reading house in stand-off

A man who fell from a roof top in Reading after a seven-hour stand-off with emergency services is being treated for life-threatening injuries.

The man, 47, fell from the roof of a house in Cambridge Street after being spotted there early on Tuesday.

He had earlier prompted a police search after a man was seen trespassing on nearby railway lines.

The man, from Bristol, is being treated at Royal Berkshire Hospital after suffering serious head injuries.

Police said they had to ask residents to stay in their homes when the man, originally from Lithuania, began throwing tiles from the roof.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said a negotiator was sent to the address at 0845 BST but the man fell from the roof.

He remains in a critical condition, police said.

The incident was voluntarily referred to the official police complaints body, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), but a decision was made for Thames Valley Police to carry out the investigation without IPCC involvement.
