Strong winds leave thousands of homes without power

Thousands of people across North Yorkshire and the North East have been affected by power cuts.

CE Electric said it had more than 180 faults which had caused power failures due to strong winds and engineers were working to restore supplies.

More than 3,500 homes were believed to be without power.

The electricity company said homes in Harrogate, Thirsk, Darlington, Northumberland, Durham and Cleveland had been affected by power cuts.

Head of Network Repairs, Mick Hickling, said: "We have well-rehearsed emergency plans in place to ensure that all available engineering resource is deployed to restore supplies as quickly as possible.
