Fire closes Southampton police station in Southampton

A police station in Southampton has been closed temporarily after a fire broke out in the building.

The blaze at Shirley police station, which began on Sunday at 16:45 BST, was quickly put out by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.

A first-floor office was affected, with damage caused to office furniture and equipment, police said.

There will still be officers there but the public will be redirected to Southampton Central.

Police said the closure would not affect policing in Shirley.

Firefighters using breathing apparatus and two hose reels, had the fire under control by 17:40 BST, she said.

An investigation continues to determine the cause of the fire.
