Early work on A11 widening begins in Norfolk and Suffolk

Preliminary work has started to prepare for a road widening scheme on the A11 in Norfolk and Suffolk.

Tracks on the Elveden Estate, through which the new road will pass, are being upgraded so that construction does not interfere with farm operations.

The Highways Agency had planned to improve the tracks next winter but the work was brought forward to ensure widening can begin early in 2012.

The project will change heavy farm vehicle access to and from the A11.

Environmental works to protect animal habitats and to preserve forest areas will also be carried out before the main construction works start.

The contract will see the last section of the A11 in East Anglia turned into a dual carriageway and a new bypass built round the village of Elveden.
