New Year's Day rise in West Midlands ambulance calls

The number of calls to West Midlands Ambulance Service increased in the early hours on New Year's Day.

It received 1,182 calls in the first five hours of 2012, compared to 548 in the final four hours of last year.

The Birmingham and Black Country totals were 577 and 248, while in Staffordshire the number rose to 248 from 113 over the same period.

The Shropshire figure increased to 87 from 31, and in Herefordshire the amount of calls rose to 35 from 12.

In Coventry and Warwickshire there were 147 calls compared to 85, while in Worcestershire the number rose to 88 from 59.
