The body of a man who had not been seen since he went out with friends on New Year's Day has been found in a Manchester river.

Gurdeep Hayer, 20, from West Bromwich, West Midlands, had been staying with friends in Fallowfield, Manchester.

Greater Manchester Police said his body was found in the water near York Street on Tuesday afternoon.

Mr Hayer, a Glyndwr University student, was last been seen leaving Sankey's Club on his own early on 2 January.

He had earlier gone out with friends to the Radium Street club in Manchester city centre.

Mr Hayer was a first-year business student at the university's Wrexham site.

Professor Michael Scott, vice-chancellor of the university said: "I was fortunate enough to spend some time speaking to Gurdeep shortly before Christmas.

"We discussed our shared roots in the West Midlands and it was clear how much he enjoyed university life and how well-liked he was by his peers.

"The thoughts of everyone at Glyndwr University are with Gurdeep's family at this tragic time."
