Motorists in Surrey are being advised to take extra care with freezing temperatures forecast overnight.

Surrey County Council has been gritting roads and also urged drivers and pedestrians to be careful.

Ian Lake, the cabinet member for transport and environment, urged people to be careful even on gritted roads.

Surrey Police has advised people to keep an eye on weather forecasts and allow longer travelling times and more fuel for journeys.

The snow began falling in the North and the Midlands before gradually moving south on Thursday night.

The Met Office is forecasting icy patches from snow melt developing in most areas of the South East during Friday night as temperatures drop below freezing.

Heathrow Airport said it was operating as normal.
