Chancellor George Osborne has pledged £130m towards a rail scheme in the north of England.

The investment will see extra trains and faster journey times for passengers travelling between Manchester and Sheffield, Bradford or Preston.

Network Rail said the funding, announced in the Budget, was a "welcome show of confidence" in its £560m Northern Hub plan.

Chief executive David Higgins said it would provide 700 new services a day.
