An investigation is under way into a fatal road crash involving six members of the same family in West Sussex.

Sussex Police said a 56-year-old woman died when a VW Golf and a Honda Accord collided on the A24 near Warnham at about 11:30 BST on Sunday.

An 18-month-old girl was critically injured and two toddlers and two adults in the Honda were seriously hurt.

Sussex Police said they were members of the same family from Pimlico in London.

The driver of the VW Golf, a 60-year-old man from Epsom in Surrey, was taken to hospital with serious chest injuries.

His 58-year-old female passenger, also from Epsom, was treated for whiplash injuries.

The A24 was closed for about five hours while rescue and recovery work took place.

Sgt Paul Skinner, of Sussex Police, said: "This is a desperately tragic incident that has left a toddler fighting for her life.

"A full investigation is now under way."
