Man cleared in South East bank fraud trial

A 32-year-old man who was accused of conning elderly people as part of a bank card scam has no case to answer, a judge has ruled.

Mark Packham was one of 11 charged in connection with bank card fraud carried out across Surrey, London, Sussex and Kent between 2011 and 2012.

Mr Packham, of Chetwode Road, Tadworth, south London, denied the charges in a trial at Guildford Crown Court.

On Tuesday, a judge directed jurors to find Mr Packham not guilty.

In September, nine other men and one woman were jailed after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud by posing as bank employees and couriers.

The gang had persuaded pensioners to hand over their bank cards and Pin numbers.
