Wickes Hemel Hempstead depot may shed 180 jobs

A DIY chain is discussing plans to close a Hertfordshire distribution centre, with the loss of 180 jobs.

Wickes said the proposal to close the depot at Swallowdale Lane, Hemel Hempstead, was due to a review of its distribution network.

The company wants to move the work to its depot at Brackmills Industrial Estate, Northampton.

Wickes said it would offer its Hemel Hempstead staff "reasonable alternative employment" in Northampton.

In a statement the company said: "We frequently review our distribution network.

"We are discussing with our employees the possibility of closing our operation at Swallowdale Lane.

"We fully understand the impact this proposed decision will have on those affected and we will be supporting them fully throughout this difficult time."

Its lease on the Swallowdale Lane site ends in November.
