A man was dragged under a car and his leg was broken in two places while trying to stop a thief from stealing a car from his Cambridgeshire home.

The 38-year-old had left the Audi A4 unattended to de-ice on his driveway at Lowry Road, St Neots, just before 07:00 GMT on Friday.

The thief drove off in the car and the car-owner was dragged down the road, before falling under its wheels.

The vehicle was abandoned in Blunham, Bedfordshire, 30 minutes later.

'Appalling crime'

The car-owner said he left the Audi for just a few moments to help his wife, who was getting their three-year-old ready for nursery.

"I turned around just in time to see the car being driven off the driveway," he added.

"I knew he would have to turn the car around to get out of the cul-de-sac so I ran out after the car.

"But I could feel the car start to move forwards and I was dragged along, I fell off but he carried on driving and the back wheels went over my leg."

A paramedic who lives nearby gave him first aid before the ambulance arrived within a couple of minutes.

Det Con James Howard, from Cambridgeshire police, said: "This is an appalling crime where the victim has suffered significant injuries while trying to protect his property."

The victim said: "I'm just glad it was me and not my wife with our son in the car."

He is being treated in hospital.
