In Pictures: Stunning storms over England

Heavy rain and storms across the UK put an end to the weeks of warm weather. Forecasters say the muggy conditions are set to continue throughout Tuesday.

Lightning was seen across much of southern England in the early hours of Tuesday. This image was captured in Braintree in Essex.

Stunning scenes were captured in the skies over the East Midlands on Monday and Tuesday as thunderstorms spread across the region.

Tim Parker took this picture of the lightning over houses in South Derbyshire. The Met Office has issued a further yellow warning of rain for Wednesday, for some parts of the country.

This image shows the height of the storm in Smeeton Westerby, Leicestershire in the early hours of Tuesday.

About 50 firefighters attended a fire at a farm near Bourne, Lincolnshire after it was struck by lightning shortly before 04:00 BST.

Poole Harbour was lit up by lightning as the spell of hot weather along the south coast was brought to an end on Monday night.

The skies were lit up across Chesterfield by the lightning too. In Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire several homes were damaged by lightning and left without power and a car also caught fire in the town.

In Heanor, Derbyshire, a house caught fire after being struck by lightning. Homeowner Arleen Gregg said: "The house just moved and we heard a bang at the same time. I didn't think it was anything serious and then I could see the reflection of the flames."

The storms had a big impact on train services in both East Anglia and at Manchester Piccadilly.
