Urban Jungle: Thetford otters in daytime hunting

1 August 2013 Last updated at 07:57 BST

Local people in Norfolk have been surprised to discover otters hunting in Thetford town centre in broad daylight.

Otters were driven to the brink of extinction by pollution and loss of suitable habitats, but in recent years they have been returning to Britain's waterways due to environmental and conservation efforts.

Although otters are becoming more common, it is still rare to see them in urban areas.

Presenter David Whiteley discovers this elusive creature hunting during the morning in Thetford close to shops and houses.

Urban Jungle is broadcast on BBC One East at 19:00 BST on Thursday, 1 August and for seven days thereafter on the iPlayer nationwide.
