The scammers spying on computer users

23 September 2013 Last updated at 02:24 BST

Jon Cuthill investigates the cold callers who try to convince you that your computer has a problem so they can access your machine and personal details.

Judy Brooks from Hampshire received telephone calls from a man falsely claiming to be from Microsoft who suggested she needed to pay him for essential computer work.

Later she found this was not needed and feared that her computer had been illegally accessed by a third party.

Inside Out investigates her story and travels to India where it finds evidence of companies using the same tactics on dozens of unsuspecting computer users in the UK and USA.

Inside Out South is broadcast on BBC One on Monday, 23 September at 19:30 BST and nationwide on the iPlayer for seven days thereafter.
