Leicester students' Great Fire of London film success

A team at De Montfort University won a competition to do the project

A Leicester student who helped create a computer generated fly-through of 17th Century London has said the response to the project has been "overwhelming".

In October, Jo Dempsey and a team at De Montfort University won a competition to turn maps from the British Library into video game style scenery.

Mr Dempsey said the group did not expect how big the project would get.

He said: "We've had lots of offers and there's a lot of potential that we need to take seriously."

The team, known as Pudding Lane Productions, entered the year-long Off the Map competition in February.

They had a choice of three different maps: The Pyramids of Giza, Wiltshire's Stonehenge, or London around the time of the Great Fire in 1666.

They only had 14 weeks to complete the task and just one 17th Century map to work from.

Due to a lack of pictures from the period, the team had to rely on Samuel Pepys' diaries to interpret how the streets would have looked.

They also visited The Shambles in York to get an impression of how London's narrow streets would have been before the Great Fire.
