Peter Maine stabbing inquiry: Police seek seven people

Seven people are being sought by police investigating the death of a former solicitor who had been arrested over fraud allegations.

Peter Maine, 56, from Wynyard, Stockton was found in running kit with fatal stab wounds near Maiden Castle Sports Centre, Durham, on 1 September.

His wounds might have been "self-inflicted", Durham Police said.

But Det Ch Insp Steve Chapman said they were "not ruling out any plausible explanation".

Mr Maine was one of a number of people arrested as part of a long-running investigation into alleged mortgage fraud.

  • Man in 20s or 30s with dark hair, cycling at around 07:45
  • Man in 30s, with dark clothing, walking to sports centre's Rose Tree pub exit about 07:50

In October, 14 people were charged in connection with alleged fraud offences, Durham Police said.

Numerous searches of the River Wear near where Mr Maine was found have been carried out, but no weapon has been found. One line of inquiry is that Mr Maine disposed of it before he died.

Three of the seven people Durham Police wish to speak to are believed to have been on the Pelaw Woods side of the River Wear around the time Mr Maine was found, while the remaining four are thought to have been on the Maiden Castle side.

Mr Chapman, who is leading the investigation, said: "The investigation remains very much active and no conclusions have been reached at this stage.

"I am appealing to the public to get in touch if they know the identity of any of the seven people we are looking to trace."
