Police officer shot with his own gun

A member of the flying squad has been injured after he shot himself with his own gun in a police building in Putney, the Metropolitan Police has said.

The officer was injured when his police-issue firearm discharged at about 09:00 GMT on Monday.

Scotland Yard said the officer was on his own when the incident happened and he is now stable in hospital.

The Evening Standard said the officer accidentally shot himself in the leg, but the Met would not confirm this.

Internal investigations

The force said that the incident did not take place at a police training centre.

An investigation into the shooting is currently under way involving the Directorate of Professional Standards and the Met's Health and Safety team.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has also been informed, as is standard procedure.

The Met's flying squad investigates armed robberies and organised crime.
