Thames Valley Police rape investigation referred to IPCC

The handling of an emergency call to police from a woman who later reported a rape has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

The initial call to Thames Valley Police was made in the early hours of 13 December. A report of a rape was later made by the same woman.

A civilian call handler and a control room officer are being investigated.

An IPCC spokesman said it would cover "serious and sensitive issues".

A 37-year old man has since been charged with rape.

The IPCC said its investigation into the response to the first call asking for assistance would involve the possibility of misconduct in public office in relation to a civilian call handler.

It added there was also a potential gross misconduct matter for a police officer who was the control room supervisor.

Thames Valley Police said it would be "inappropriate" to comment further.
