A major search operation is under way to find a 20-year-old student from Middlesbrough who went missing after a night out in the Lake District.

Matthew Jordan was visiting with friends when he was last seen at 01:30 GMT on Thursday outside the Stag's Inn in Bowness.

His disappearance has sparked a major search involving police, mountain rescue volunteers and lake wardens.

His parents have travelled to Cumbria to help with the search.

He is described as 5ft 10in tall with dark brown hair, and wearing a navy long-sleeved shirt, jeans and brown boots.

Insp Kevin Spedding, from Cumbria Police, said: "We are becoming very concerned for Matthew, as this is extremely out of character for him.

"We are supporting his family at this very difficult time and we are all hoping that we find Matthew safe and well."

A family spokesman added: "Matthew is a popular and kind young man. We are obviously very concerned and worried for him.

"It is so out of character for him not to have been in touch with anyone. We just want to hear from you Matthew.

"The last time we seen Matthew, he was his usual happy self.

"His friends and family are continuing to help police in the search and again we appeal for any help from the public in the search for Matthew."
