Ronald Hayes, of Morpeth, Northumberland, was assaulted outside the Liverpool Arms pub in Northgate Street, Chester, on 23 November.

He was left in a critical condition and died a day later, police said.

'Tragic case'

Cheshire Police said Gardner punched Mr Hayes "once in the face with his right fist" before he "fell to the floor hitting his head on the pavement".

Det Insp Steve Beddows said: "This is a tragic case in which a man has needlessly lost his life.

"Ronald′s family were at his bedside when he died and have been left deeply distressed and grief stricken by the loss... and the manner in which his life was ended so suddenly and prematurely."
