Vote counts begin in the North East

Votes are being counted across the north-east of England after polling closed in the local government and European elections.

One third of the seats are up for grabs in each of North Tyneside, Newcastle, Gateshead, South Tyneside, Sunderland and Hartlepool councils.

Polls closed at 22:00 BST, with the local election counts taking place overnight or on Friday.

European election results will be announced late on Sunday.
