Blue plaque for Chester Zoo founder George Mottershead
A blue plaque has been unveiled in Greater Manchester celebrating the life of the man who founded Chester Zoo.
George Mottershead opened the zoo in 1931 in the grounds of a stately home in Upton. He died in 1978, aged 84.
He is remembered as a pioneer of modern zoo design, preferring to use moats and ditches as an alternative to Victorian iron cages.
His daughter June Williams unveiled the plaque marking where her father lived in Sale Moor, Trafford.
