A retired PE teacher has been convicted of sexually abusing schoolboys nearly 60 years ago.

Marcus Marcussen, who worked at Illmington Road Comprehensive School in Weoley Castle, Birmingham, assaulted 12 students between 1957 and 1978.

A jury at Birmingham Crown Court found him guilty of 25 counts of indecent assault on boys.

The 91-year-old, of Rochford, near Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire, is due to be sentenced on Friday.

'Sexual predator'

The trial heard how pupils were abused during and after PE lessons and at a swimming club called the Square Club in in Weoley Castle.

An investigation was sparked after one of the victims, who was a pupil at the school in the 1970s, sought help after suffering a breakdown.

West Midlands Crown Prosecution Service spokeswoman Jeanette Bryant said: "Marcus Marcussen was a serial sexual predator who over three decades abused his position of trust and preyed on young vulnerable victims for his own sexual gratification."

She said it was 40 years later, when one of his victims reported what had happened, that he was was arrested.

"I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all the victims and witnesses who supported the prosecution case and their courage in giving their evidence during this trial," she said.
