Police and mountain rescue volunteers searching the River Tees for a missing Newcastle man have recovered his body.

Wadud Abdul disappeared on Thursday while celebrating his 36th birthday with a family day out at Low Force, near Middleton-in-Teesdale.

Mr Abdul, a teacher at Hadrian School, Benwell, went for a swim near the waterfall, but got into difficulties.

His body was found by specialist divers. Police said his family had been informed.

The search operation involved police, fire and ambulance services and Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team.
