Forty led to safety in Luton flat fire

Forty residents were led to safety when a fire started at a 14-storey block of flats in Luton.

Ackworth Court, in Hockwell Ring, was evacuated on Friday night due to a fire in a bedroom on the first floor.

The fire service said 12 people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and two people were taken to hospital. Their condition is unknown.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by police and the fire service.

Most residents in the flats are elderly and not all have been allowed back into their homes as the electricity supply has been switched off on the first floor.

Those affected were offered help by the Red Cross Emergency Support Service on Friday night and local authorities have offered alternative accommodation where necessary.
