Two crashes cause gas main leaks in Bedford

Two gas mains were damaged by vehicles, causing gas leaks, in separate incidents in Bedford.

A car rolled into a ditch and came to a rest on a gas main in Manton Lane at 1930 BST on Tuesday.

The fire service advised police to evacuate buildings after measuring gas in the air at the site near Bedford Modern School.

Two hours later, a 500m exclusion zone was set up in Stratton Road after a lorry damaged a gas main station.

Both leaks were fixed by midnight.
