Bedford attack man dies in hospital

A man who was beaten and kicked in the head by a group of men in a Bedford street has died in hospital.

Pawel Jozef Smiertka, 43, a Polish national, was attacked in Commercial Road on 26 November and died in Addenbrooke's Hospital on Thursday.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out on Saturday.

Bedfordshire Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the attack at 1840 GMT, or who was driving in the area at the time, to contact officers.

Police said they had contacted Mr Smiertka's wife and children, who are living in Austria, and his sister in Poland.

Det Insp Sharn Basra said of the site where the attack happened: "This location is clearly visible to traffic passing along Horne Lane and River Street, roads which were busy at the time of the assault.

"Anyone driving along these roads should contact us if they saw the assault or a group of men leaving the area at this time."

Police also appealed for anyone who may have spoken to Mr Smiertka recenltly to contact officers.
