A man who died in hospital a week after an attack in Bedford died from head injuries, post-mortem tests have shown.

Pawel Jozef Smiertka, 43, a Polish national, was attacked in Commercial Road on 26 November and died in Addenbrooke's Hospital last Thursday.

A post-mortem examination was carried out on Saturday but further tests were required, a police spokeswoman said.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the attack at 1840 GMT to contact officers.

Police said they had contacted Mr Smiertka's wife and children, who are living in Austria, and his sister in Poland.

Further details will be released on Monday, the spokeswoman said.
