Homes evacuated during garage fire at Berkhamsted

Homes were evacuated and a street closed in a Hertfordshire town when a fire broke out at a car garage containing gas cylinders.

A 100m (330ft) cordon was put in place in the High Street, Berkhamsted, at about 1950 GMT on Sunday.

More than 35 firefighters dealt with the fire at its peak, and the cordon was lifted at 0045 GMT on Monday.

People were allowed back into their homes and the area declared safe, Hertfordshire Police said.

Evacuees had been taken to Sportspace in Douglas Gardens, off the High Street.
