Central Beds to consult widely on schools merger plan
Parents, children and staff from three special schools in Bedfordshire will be consulted on a possible merger.
Central Bedfordshire Council is proposing the change for schools in the Dunstable and Houghton Regis area.
Glenwood, Hillcrest and Weatherfield would be combined to create an area special school across three sites.
Weatherfield School is to apply for academy status, and the council may consider merging Glenwood and Hillcrest.
The council said: "The current proposals are geared towards securing good quality special educational provision for current and future families."
Mark Versallion, responsible for children's services at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: "Our overriding concern is to meet the needs of children and young people, particularly those with complex needs.
"The outcomes for these children are always likely to be better if they can go to school close to home and their families can remain involved."
