Public invited to name new £26m aquatic centre in Luton

People in Luton are being given the chance to name the town's new £26m sports and aquatics centre.

The new facility is currently under construction in Hitchin Road, Stopsley and is due to open next year.

When completed, it will provide a competition standard Olympic-size 50m swimming pool, diving centre and sports hall.

Luton Borough Council leader Hazel Simmons says it is only right for the people of Luton to name the centre.

"We were sitting around a table recently, trying to think of a name for the centre, and it occurred to us that it is being built for the community and therefore it is only right that Luton residents should have a say in what its official name is," she said.

"The centre will not only provide superb swimming and diving facilities, it will also have a modern sports centre to help the people of Luton to live healthier more active lives and give us the ability to support potential future sports champions."

When completed, the centre will be run on behalf of the council by Active Luton.

Active Luton's chief executive Helen Barnett said: "The centre is much more than a swimming pool and we want the community to come up with a name that accurately reflect this."

Anyone wishing to enter the competition, should e-mail their suggestion, name and contact details to Luton Borough Council by Monday 5 July.

The centre is scheduled for completion by July 2012.
