The wife of a 73-year-old who has been missing in St Albans since last Saturday has appealed for help in trying to find him.

More than 100 officers, the dog unit and a helicopter have searched the city for Alan Spray, of Hatfield, who was last seen in Verulam Road.

Barbara Spray said: "This situation is heartbreaking. My husband is out there somewhere. We all miss him."

The couple have five children and five grandchildren.

He was last seen near the Total garage shortly after 20:00 BST.

'Gentle and funny'

Mrs Spray added: "We just want him home. Please help us find him."

Their son Christopher said: "We miss our kind, gentle and funny dad.

"There is a huge gap in our family without him."

Mr Spray is 5ft 9in (1.75m), balding and wears light reactive spectacles.

He was described as wearing a brown and blue checked short sleeve shirt and brown/grey trousers. He may be carrying a book.

Officers are becoming increasingly worried for Mr Spray's welfare and have urged those who live in the Verulam Road area to check their sheds and garages.
