Two charged over attack on police officer in Bedford

A man and a youth have been charged with assault over an attack on a police officer responding to a call to a burglary in Bedford.

The 30-year-old constable, patrolling alone in a traffic car, disturbed an offender leaving a property on Monday.

As she tried to make an arrest she was punched in the face.

A 30-year-old man from Bedford has been arrested and charged with GBH and burglary and a 15-year-old youth with common assault and criminal damage.

Both are due to appear at Bedford Magistrates' Court later.

A 17-year-old youth was interviewed and released on police bail pending further enquiries.

The officer, who has eight years' service, suffered a broken eye socket, cheekbone and nose in the attack in Oldfield Road.

She was taken to Bedford Hospital and has since been transferred to a specialist hospital for treatment.
