Scientists to create GM wheat in Hertfordshire
Scientists have been given the go-ahead to conduct a trial of genetically modified wheat in Hertfordshire.
The field trials of the cereal, which has been modified to make it resistant to aphids, will take place at Rothamsted Research farm in Harpenden.
Crops will be sown in spring 2012 and 2013, the Environment Department said.
It is hoped the genetically modified plants will release a chemical which will deter aphids, and attract the insects' predators and parasites.
