Stevenage family rescued after arson attack

Firefighters have rescued a woman, two boys and a dog after an arson attack on a house in Hertfordshire.

A man in his 40s managed to jump from a window of the maisonette in Plash Drive, Stevenage, and raise the alarm early on Friday.

It is believed the front door of the house was set on fire.

Det Sgt Phoebe Butfoy appealed for witnesses to come forward. "We are treating this as a deliberate fire," she said.

"Thankfully no-one was injured.

"The fire was contained to the front door and porch, and the rest of the property suffered smoke damage.

"However, there could have been a very different outcome had the alarm not been raised so soon."
