Saints nightclub in Bedford closed after violence
A nightclub in Bedford has been shut for three months after police concerns over the high number of violent incidents.
Saints nightclub was closed by Bedford Borough Council's licensing committee on Friday.
Bedfordshire Police said they called the emergency meeting after a large-scale fight last weekend which led to a man being stabbed in the chest.
A full hearing will on take place 19 December.
The committee heard that since January, 76 criminal offences had taken place either in the club or stemming from customers who had been there.
Of these, 30 offences involved violence, it was claimed.
Ch Insp Rob McCaffray said officers could not allow the situation to continue into the busy Christmas period.
"Asking for a licence suspension is a step we take very rarely and very seriously," he said.
"But we felt there was no choice because of the volume and nature of the incidents we've attended in the last few months."
The committee passed a full suspension order which means the club's licence has been temporarily suspended for up to three months with immediate effect.
